Closely Held & Family Business
Operators for closely held and family businesses, across the lifecycle
Closely held and family businesses are built differently, and they need advisors who understand that. The owner is often the operator. Decisions are personal as well as financial. The cap table might span generations or a handful of partners. What got the company here, the founder’s instinct and a tight team, eventually runs into the limits of the infrastructure underneath it.
We work with owners through the moments that matter most: growing the value of the business, building the operating backbone, and preparing for an eventual sale or transition. Our Managing Directors have sat in the operating seats at companies like yours, so we bring the judgment of people who have done the job, not the theory of people who have only studied it.
Who we mean by closely held
We use “closely held” broadly. It covers family businesses passing between generations, companies with a handful of owners or a multi-family cap table, founder-owned companies scaling past their early infrastructure, and private-equity and venture-backed companies where ownership is concentrated. If a small group owns the business and the leadership is close to the work, you’re who we serve.
The three jobs we do across the lifecycle
Grow enterprise value. We find where value is hiding, in margin, growth, cash flow, and the operating model, and we put operators in to capture it. This is the work that compounds, and you don’t need to be selling to do it. [Link: Grow Enterprise Value]
Build the operating backbone. Most closely held businesses hit a point where founder instinct needs to become real operating discipline: controls, board-ready reporting, and a finance function that can support the next stage. We build that backbone without stripping out what built the company. It’s the work most teams underestimate, building systems so the business can answer hard questions without the founder in the room, and it’s the work we do best.
Prepare for a sale or transition. Whether the exit is a sale, a recapitalization, or a generational handoff, the owners who prepare early get the best outcomes. We build the financial story, clean the books, and lift the value before you go to market. You’re never too early to start. Start with our Exit Readiness Check to see where you stand, it takes two minutes.
Why owners choose Everest
You get operators who’ve sat in the seat, not staffing and not a solo consultant. Our leaders have run the CFO, COO, CMO, and CHRO functions at closely held and sponsor-backed companies. We’re hands-on from day one, we flex up or down as your needs change, and our bench of more than 30 leaders means you can add a different discipline without starting over. When you’re ready for permanent hires, we help recruit them and hand off cleanly.
Proof
A division of a family-owned construction and pipe manufacturing conglomerate came to us with a finance function that needed a ground-up rebuild, compounded by cash and cost-accounting pressure. We cleared the processing backlog, built cash flow projections tied to collections and project costs, hired a strong controller, and tightened project cost accounting. Clean financials let the company secure a line of credit, shortened the cash conversion cycle, and positioned the division to integrate cleanly into a stronger sister company.
Frequently asked questions
Do you only work with finance? Finance is our core, but we also provide operational, marketing, and HR leadership. Many closely held businesses start with a finance need and expand from there.
We’re not planning to sell. Is this still for us? Yes. Most of our work with closely held businesses is about growing value and building rigor while you own and run the company. Exit preparation is one option, not the only one.
How is this different from our accountant or our banker? Your accountant keeps the books and your banker runs the transaction. We’re the operator inside the business who builds the value, the infrastructure, and the financial story those advisors then work with.
