What Is Fractional Executive Leadership
What is a fractional executive?
Fractional vs. interim vs. project-based: what's the difference?
These three terms get used interchangeably, but they solve different problems. Here’s how they differ.
Fractional is ongoing, part-time leadership. The seat isn’t empty, the company just doesn’t need that role full-time. A fractional CFO might work two or three days a week, indefinitely, as a permanent part of the team. Best when you need senior leadership on a continuing basis but not at full-time scale.
Interim is full-time leadership for a defined period. A seat is open, often suddenly, and the work can’t wait for a search. An interim executive steps in at full capacity to run the function until a permanent leader is hired, then hands off. Best when a role is vacant and you need continuity now.
Project-based is leadership scoped to a specific outcome. A capital raise, an ERP implementation, a sale, an integration. The engagement ends when the project is done. Best when you have a defined, finite job that needs an experienced hand to lead it.
The simplest way to choose: if the role is ongoing but part-time, you want fractional. If the role is vacant and urgent, you want interim. If you have one specific outcome to deliver, you want project-based.
When do you need fractional executive leadership?
You’re growing faster than your current team can support, and the gaps are starting to show. A key executive has left and the search will take months. You’re heading into a capital raise, a sale, or an acquisition and need someone who has done it before. You need C-suite judgment but the full-time cost doesn’t fit your stage yet. Or you have a specific problem, a stalled ERP, late books, a marketing reset, that needs senior leadership to fix.
How Everest delivers it
We provide fractional and interim leadership across finance, operations, marketing, and human resources, all three engagement models. What sets us apart is who shows up and how we work.
Operators who have sat in the seat. Our Managing Directors have actually held the CFO, COO, CMO, and CHRO roles they’re hired into. You get judgment from experience, not advice from the sidelines.
Hands-on from day one. No 90-day discovery period. We assess the current state while delivering value in the first weeks, then build and execute from there.
Flexible by design. Heavier involvement up front, usually three to four days a week, scaling down as the infrastructure we build takes hold. Cancelable with 30 days’ notice.
Backed by a bench. Each of our leaders carries a capped client load, supported by a full bench of more than 30 leaders across disciplines, so you’re never left waiting and you can add a different skill set without starting over.
Built to graduate you. Our goal is to make ourselves optional, not indispensable. When you’re ready for a permanent hire, we help recruit them and overlap to transfer knowledge.
Frequently asked questions
Is a fractional executive the same as a consultant? No. A consultant studies a problem and hands you recommendations. A fractional executive holds the role, owns the outcomes, and executes alongside your team. We do the work, not just the analysis.
How many days a week does a fractional executive work? It varies by need. Many engagements start at three to four days a week while the foundation is being built, then scale down to one or two as systems take hold.
How is this priced? Engagements are structured as hourly, monthly retainer, or project-based, depending on what fits your situation and billing preference. Rates reflect the seniority, complexity, and duration of the work, and we scope specifics with you.
What’s the difference between a fractional CFO and an outsourced accounting firm? An outsourced firm processes transactions. A fractional CFO leads the finance function, builds the model, sits with the board, and makes the strategic calls. We offer both, and the right answer depends on what you actually need.
Can a fractional engagement become a full-time hire? Often the best outcome is that we help you recruit a permanent leader and overlap to hand off cleanly. Our aim is to build the function and make ourselves optional.
